Cultural Diversity & Special Populations

In providing services to survivors of family violence and/or sexual assault, understanding and respecting cultural diversity is vital.  One of the best books available about domestic violence is “When Violence Begins at Home” by Karen J. Wilson.  Please contact Volunteer.Coordinator@panhandlecrisiscenter.org to check out a copy of this book from Panhandle Crisis Center’s library or request the book from your local library.  We highly recommend reading this book in its entirety; however, for the cultural diversity section of the volunteer training, only Chapter 7, The Oppression that Binds:  Barriers to Living Violence Free, and Chapter 11, Battered Women and Communities of Faith, are required.

Required Reading:

Domestic Violence:
When Violence Begins At Home by Karen J. Wilson.  Publisher:  Hunter House; 2nd edition (November 30, 2005).  ISBN-10: 0897934555, ISBN-13: 978-0897934558   (Required Reading - Chapters 7 and 11.)

Sexual Assault:
Sexual Assault Advocate Training Manual - Texas Association Against Sexual Assault and Office of the Attorney General.  Required Reading - Chapter 6, “Special Populations”.
